So much has happened since I set out to tell the story behind the making of My So-Called Life. Like the rest of life, and “So-Called Life” for that matter, there have been some tremendous highs and a few not-so-highs along the way.
If the first few years was all about discovering how friendly and talented members of the MSCL production team are, this last year has made me appreciate the small but always-passionate community of fans – they have helped me keep this project going all this time.
So, six years later, where are we with it all?
As many of you who belong to the book’s super-secret Facebook Group already know, I’ve taken some time away from completing the chapter about the final episode to edit the first few chapters.
At present, I’m up to my eyeballs in the early career of one Winnie Holzman, and what a lesson it is for anyone who’s ever questioned the value of their own talent.
Hindsight is a lovely thing, of course, but there was a time when she put everything she had into a major project, only to see it meet with a disappointing end.
“I had to ask myself that question,” she told me. “‘Am I going to write [again] and what am I going to write next?’ The answers didn’t come immediately but I began to realize that I did need to keep writing.”
The soul-searching she went through, and the resilience she ultimately showed, transformed her into the beloved writer she is today. Simply put, had she not picked herself up and brushed herself off, there would’ve been no My So-Called Life.
And there will be no MSCL book if I continue on like this, so I’d best get back to work. Thanks again to everyone who’s helped me keep this project alive.
Go now. Go!
