In which real life rudely interrupts 'So-Called Life.'
I have a confession to make. I think I've spent so many years writing about how well My So-Called Life captured what it feels like to be human, I somehow forgot how it actually feels to be human in real life.
A little over a month ago I was on track to finish up the chapter on Episode 12 "Self-Esteem" when my wife and I got hit with the one-two punch of having to move house on a Sunday, and my mother passing away Monday morning.
Suddenly it was all I could do just to keep the dayjob humming along. And as so often happens in cases like this, it was our poor little book that suffered.
One bright point during this time was a great conversation I had with Tony Holland, director of both "Life of Brian" and "Weekend," who shared some fascinating insights about the show. (More on this later.)
All of which is to say that I've returned to working on the book a little shaky, but ready to tackle Ep. 13 "Pressure."
